SMP stands with vehicle owners and independent repair professionals in support of open access to vehicle data and repair information.
Standard Motor Products has been a committed advocate for the Right to Repair movement for more than two decades. We believe that vehicle owners have the right to choose where and how their vehicles are repaired, and that independent repair shops must have access to the same diagnostic data, repair procedures, and tools as franchised dealerships.

SMP supports legislation and industry standards that require automakers to provide independent repair facilities with the same telematics, diagnostic, and repair data available to their authorized dealer networks. Restricting this data harms consumers and stifles competition.
We manufacture and distribute more than 40,000 SKUs precisely because vehicle owners deserve choice. Proprietary repair ecosystems that lock out aftermarket parts raise costs for consumers and reduce the quality of competition that drives innovation.
SMP actively participates in the Motor Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) advocacy efforts at the federal and state level, supporting Right to Repair legislation that protects consumer choice.
Through our Standard® Training program, we provide free technical training resources to independent technicians, ensuring they have the knowledge to service modern vehicles — including EVs and advanced driver assistance systems — without relying on dealer-only tools.
SMP participates in industry coalitions and legislative efforts to protect the independent repair industry. Contact our government affairs team to learn more.
